The Coast Guard has seized a huge quantity of counterfeit cigarettes illegally transported for marketing by evading customs and taxes in a joint operation in Patuakhali on Saturday.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan gave this information in a press release on Monday morning.
The press release said that a joint operation was conducted on Saturday at 11 am in the area adjacent to the intersection under the Sadar Police Station of Patuakhali, based on secret information, by Coast Guard Station Patuakhali and the Customs, Excise and VAT Department.
During the operation, a suspicious easy bike was searched in the area and 29,600 sticks of counterfeit cigarettes worth about 1 lakh 77 thousand taka, illegally transported for marketing by evading customs and taxes, were seized. At this time, it was not possible to arrest anyone as the real owner of the cigarettes could not be found.
The process of taking further legal action on the seized cigarettes is under process.
The Coast Guard will continue such operations in the future to prevent smuggling.
