Dohar (Dhaka) Correspondent
Political leaders and local people from Wards 7 and 8 of the municipality have formed a human chain and protest march demanding the partial abolition of Doha Municipality.
Hundreds of residents and political leaders participated in a human chain at the Kalema Chattar intersection in Joypara upazila at 12 noon on Monday.
After the human chain, they marched around the main road of Joypara and gathered in front of the office of Upazila Executive Officer and Municipality Administrator Tania Tabassum. At this time, they shouted various slogans and demanded the cancellation of Ward No. 7/8, a part of the municipality.
In a brief speech, the speakers said, "Since the establishment of the municipality, we, as residents of municipalities 7 and 8, have not received any civic amenities. Even though we do not receive any amenities, at the end of the year they hand us the burden of taxes. Most of the people here earn their living by farming. They somehow make ends meet. It has become impossible for poor farmers to pay municipal taxes. That is why they have come out on the streets today. Officials are harassing us in various ways because they cannot pay taxes on time. Many of the residents of the municipality now have no income. Many are spending their days in anxiety due to the pressure of taxes. We want relief from this. So, let us be included in Sutarpara Union as before."
Upazila BNP Senior Vice President Md. Nurul Islam Bepari, former Jubo Dal leader Abdul Karim Bepari, Adv. Sumon Mudha, Karim, Gias Uddin, Julhas Sharif and others spoke at the time.
Later, when a delegation met with Municipal Administrator Tania Tabassum, she said she would inform the matter to higher authorities.
