Quilt makers in Cumilla busy ahead of winter

Quilt makers across the southern upazilas of Cumilla—including Laksam, Lalmai, Nangalkot, and Monohargonj—are working tirelessly as early winter breezes and late-night fog herald the approach of the cold season.
Local artisans are seeing a surge in demand across key regional markets, including Monohargonj Bazar, Daulatganj Railgate, Laksam Railway Junction Bazar, Bagmara, Bhuschi, Harishchar, Bangadda, Mahini, Nangalkot Pourashava, Baisgaon, and Natherpetua. Workshops are bustling with activity as craftsmen process cotton, jute, and coconut fiber to make quilts, mattresses, and pillows. However, local traders noted that current political instability has somewhat impacted business sales.
Artisans in the Laksam Daulatganj area reported working long hours, often from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, producing four to five quilts daily. Earnings average between Tk 400 and Tk 600 per piece, depending on stitching patterns and cotton quality. Despite the workload, many craftsmen are contemplating shifting to other professions due to rising raw material costs and reduced profit margins.
Traders noted that most customers prefer placing custom orders over buying ready-made items. Depending on dimensions, a single-person quilt requires 5 to 7.5 kg of cotton, while larger quilts take 6.5 to 10.5 kg. White super cotton sells for Tk 400–500 per kg, while black and wheel cotton range between Tk 400 and Tk 550 per kg. Demand remains highest among lower-income households seeking affordable bedding options.
Md. Abul Kalam, proprietor of Abul Kalam Bedding Store in Laksam Daulatganj Bazar, said that customer preferences have evolved over time due to the influx of imported blankets and ready-made alternatives.
