Many people are including Sammam in the list of fruits. That is why Sammam is being sold quite well in the market. This fruit tastes a lot like melon. The outside looks like a dark brown. It is also known as the fruit of Saudi Arabia.
It was seen on the spot in Kandirpar town of Cumilla on Friday night, one kilogram of Sammam is being sold for 120 to 150 taka. One kilogram of Sammam is being sold for two to three taka. There is also a lot of interest in buying Sammam among the buyers who come to the market. Many are haggling over the price. Some are looking at it in their hands and buying it.
Sammam is available in four or five shops in the Kandirpar fruit market. The sale is also quite good. This fruit can be seen in other big markets and supermarkets in Cumilla .
Kandirpar fruit sellers zHabib and Khalid said that they have been selling sammam along with other fruits for three years. They keep delicious fruits like sammam along with all the fruits. This time, the sales are also quite good. They sell 20-25 kg of sammam every day. The demand for sammam is increasing due to the high prices of other fruits.
A customer Babon was talked to at the fruit shop and he said, "It is good to keep an exceptional fruit along with other fruits occasionally. Everyone in the house likes it. So today I bought one kg of sammam. I buy sammam after a few days.
Although it is a fruit of the Saudi Arabian region, sammam has been cultivated in the western part of the country on a limited scale for 8-10 years. Sammam is mainly cultivated in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Kushtia, and Bogra regions. Many people in this region have been producing this fruit for 8-10 years.
Cumilla Agricultural Extension Department Deputy Director Md. Mizanur Rahman said, "We are already encouraging farmers to cultivate sammam in Cumilla . We hope that sammam will be cultivated in some upazilas by next year. This year, we have prepared land for cultivation in Daudkandi upazila within the fence. He also said, sammam has already become popular with people.
The outer part of one variety of sammam is green and the inside is red. The outer part of another variety of sammam is yellow and the inside is red. However, both fruits are sweet, delicious and fragrant to eat.
The sammam tree bears fruit within two to two and a half months of sowing the seeds. This fruit matures within three months.
