Shortage of doctor. other manpower : People deprived of treatment at Tajumuddin 50-bed Health Complex

Abdul Mannan Tamim, Tajumuddin (Bhola)

The 50-bed Upazila Health Complex is the only reliable place for medical services for 150,000 people in Tajumuddin Upazila of Bhola.
In 2019, the health complex was upgraded from 31 beds to 50 beds with the aim of providing improved health services to the people of the upazila. But the required number of doctors and manpower has not been provided accordingly. Currently, medical service activities are being severely disrupted in the hospital due to the shortage of doctors and other  manpower. Due to this, patients coming from far and wide in the upazila are facing extreme hardship. As a result, the poor people of this upazila are being deprived of medical services.According to hospital sources, there are only two people working in the 15 posts of consultant and medical officer, besides 31 posts of nurse and midwife, there are 12 people working, two posts of pathologist are vacant, and 29 are vacant against 66 posts of third class. On the one hand, the health complex is facing a manpower crisis, on the other hand, there is a crisis of equipment and technicians. Due to lack of manpower, the operation theater, X-ray, ECG ultrasonogram machines are lying idle. Md. Jasim and others who came for treatment said that due to the distance of the district health complex, they are forced to seek medical services here. And, because of that, many patients have to remain at risk. In addition, due to the inoperability of the X-ray, ultrasonograph machines in the hospital and the lack of technicians, many tests have to be done from outside for the patients admitted here. Due to this, the patients who come to seek services here are suffering financially.Senior nurse Mishu Dutta on duty at the hospital said that due to the shortage of nurses, doctors and manpower, they are struggling to provide the desired services to the patients in the ward. Despite that, they are trying to provide medical services to the admitted patients.Tajumuddin Upazila Health and Medical Officer Dr. Rahat Hossan said that due to the shortage of doctors and manpower, we are struggling to provide quality services to the two to two and a half hundred patients in the hospital's outpatient and inpatient departments every day. He said that they are regularly communicating with the authorities to resolve the crisis.
