Sindhurmati dighi to be developed as religious tourism hub: Relief Minister Dulu

Lalmonirhat Correspondent

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has announced that the historic Sindhurmati Dighi, a sacred pilgrimage site for the Hindu community in Lalmonirhat, will be developed into an attractive religious and tourist destination equipped with modern amenities.

The Minister made these remarks while responding to journalists on Thursday afternoon after inspecting the ongoing development work at Sindhurmati Dighi and its surrounding banks in Panchgram Union of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila.

"Sindhurmati Dighi is not merely a historic site; it is a vital pilgrimage location for the Sanatan Hindu community," said Asadul Habib Dulu. "Therefore, we will carry out necessary developments while preserving its heritage, ensuring that devotees visiting from various parts of the country can smoothly perform their religious rituals and holy baths."

He noted that the traditional site had fallen into a dilapidated state due to long-standing neglect, despite its deep ties to local history, folklore, and the religious sentiments of devotees who travel from far and wide.

Recalling local historical accounts, the Minister shared, "According to local tradition, when the region once faced a severe water crisis, Zamindar Narayan Chakraborty excavated a pond here. However, as water failed to emerge even after the excavation, his two daughters, Sindhur and Moti, reportedly sacrificed their lives. It is believed that the site was named 'Sindhurmati' in their honour.

He emphasized that the development of Sindhurmati Dighi will not be limited to infrastructural upgrades alone. Enhancing the aesthetics and overall environment to facilitate unhindered religious activities for devotees will also be prioritized.

During the visit, Sadar UNO Mononita Das, Sadar Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Shamsur Rahman, and District BNP Joint General Secretary ABM Faruk Siddique, among others, were present.
