Smuggled Burmese cigarettes worth Tk over crore seized in Naikhongchhari

In a series of operations conducted by the 11 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in the rugged hilly areas of Naikhongchhari Upazila, Bandarban, near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, a massive haul of smuggled Burmese cigarettes was seized.
During the operations, a total of 114,880 (one lakh fourteen thousand eight hundred eighty) packets of Burmese cigarettes were confiscated, found abandoned without any owner.
According to sources from Naikhongchhari Battalion (11 BGB), the operations were carried out from July 1 to July 10, 2025, as part of continuous anti-smuggling efforts along the border. Despite adverse weather conditions, the vigilant BGB patrol teams successfully executed these operations.
The BGB stated that the cigarettes were intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh through the border. However, sensing the presence of BGB personnel, the smugglers fled, leaving the goods behind.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Kafil Uddin Kayes, Commanding Officer of Naikhongchhari Battalion, said, “Our personnel conducted challenging patrols in the border hills amid heavy rainfall. We have adopted a zero-tolerance policy against drugs and smuggling. The market value of these cigarettes exceeds one crore taka. They will be destroyed following due process.”
He further noted that border patrols have been intensified to curb drug trafficking and smuggling, and such operations will continue in the future.
Local conscious citizens expressed satisfaction with the BGB’s efforts, stating, “Such proactive measures by the BGB are making the border areas significantly safer. These activities need to be further strengthened to combat drugs and smuggling.”
