Two arrested with illegal cigarettes worth Tk 16 lakh in Dighinala

Police arrested two smugglers with a large quantity of Oris cigarettes illegally brought in by evading customs duty in Dighinala, Khagrachari on Saturday based on a secret information.
They were arrested with illegal cigarettes after conducting a raid in the Choto Merung area of Merung UP of the upazila.
The arrested are Md. Selim (26) and Md. Kashem (21), both of whom are residents of Sobahanpur area of Merung UP. During this, 14,000 (fourteen thousand) packets of foreign cigarettes (ORIS) were recovered from 2 unregistered Mahindra cars used for smuggling and the two vehicles were seized.
The current market value of these (ORIS) cigarettes recovered is said to be around Tk 16 lakh.
Dighinala Police Station OC Md. Zakaria said that a case under the Special Powers Act 25-B of 1974 has been registered against the two arrested. The police will continue their regular operations to prevent illegal smuggling in the border areas and bring all criminals under the law, including the seizure of two unregistered Mahindra vehicles used for smuggling.
