530-kg fsh fry released in Habiganj to boost native fish

A total of 530 kilograms of fish fingerlings were released into open water bodies in Lakhai and Shayestaganj upazilas of Habiganj on Tuesday as part of a government initiative aimed at increasing fish production, supporting natural breeding and conserving aquatic biodiversity.
The fish fingerling release programme was organised with the objectives of increasing the abundance of native fish species, protecting aquatic ecosystems, improving the socioeconomic condition of fishing communities and ensuring the sustainable use of fisheries resources.
In Lakhai, 265 kilograms of fish fingerlings were released into the floodplain adjacent to Chiknpur Bridge in Lakhai Haor at around noon. Habiganj Deputy Commissioner Dr G. M. Sarfaraz attended the programme as the chief guest.
District Fisheries Officer Shariful Alam, Lakhai Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tarek Hasan, Acting Upazila Fisheries Officer Kanik Chandra Sharma, Lakhai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sharif Ahmed, Project Implementation Officer Md Rafiqul Islam Rakib, Bamoi Union Parishad Chairman Haji Azad Hossain Furuk, Lakhai Union Parishad Chairman Arif Hossain Rupon and Jubo Dal leader Md Azam Mia were present at the programme.
Officials and representatives from different government departments, political leaders, journalists, local fishermen and beneficiaries also attended the event.
The programme in Lakhai was implemented by the Lakhai Upazila Fisheries Office under the 2026 fish fingerling release initiative.
Meanwhile, another 265 kilograms of fish fingerlings were released into the floodplain adjacent to the Sutang River in Shayestaganj at around 10:00am on the same day.
Shayestaganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Asaduzzaman, Upazila Fisheries Officer Kanik Chandra Sharma and Nurpur Union Parishad Chairman Golam Kibria Chowdhury Belal attended the programme, along with officials from different government departments, fishermen and beneficiaries.
The combined release of 530 kilograms of fingerlings in the two upazilas is part of efforts to replenish fish stocks in open water bodies and increase the availability of indigenous fish species.
The initiative also seeks to support the breeding and growth of fish in natural water bodies, maintain aquatic biodiversity and promote sustainable fisheries management.
Local fishermen and beneficiaries expressed their participation in the programmes as the fisheries authorities continued their efforts to enhance fish resources in the open waters of Habiganj.
The programmes were implemented by the respective Upazila Fisheries Offices of Lakhai and Shayestaganj, Habiganj.
