BNP Vice Chairman Abdus Salam Pintu said, “On August 4 last year, while in jail, I learned that hundreds of people had been killed. Everyone broke down in tears. I spent the whole night praying for them. The next day, around 11 a.m., news came that Hasina had fled the country. Everyone in the jail jumped with joy. Allah had given Sheikh Hasina a chance for so long, but He did not let her hold on to it.”
He made these remarks on Friday afternoon in Bhuyapur, Tangail, while addressing a discussion meeting organized by the Upazila and Municipal BNP following a rally marking July Uprising Day.
Pintu further said, “We have witnessed many downfalls, but none like that of the Awami League. They oppressed the people, snatched away their food, laundered hundreds of crores of taka abroad, destroyed democracy, and robbed people of their right to vote.”
Pintu urged Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal to be true servants of the people, warning, “No extortion will be tolerated. If anyone is involved, the party will take strict action against them. No fascist government will have a place in the country anymore. Under the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia and the pride of the youth, Tarique Rahman, democracy will be restored. The people will no longer accept any ‘mirror house’ election.”
The event was presided over by Upazila BNP President Advocate Golam Mostafa and addressed by General Secretary Selimuzzaman Selu, Municipal BNP President Jahangir Hossain, Municipal BNP General Secretary Khandaker Lutfor Rahman Gias, and other leaders of the BNP and its affiliated organizations.
Earlier in the morning, leaders and activists from various unions and municipalities marched to the bus stand square. Later, under Salam Pintu’s leadership, a large rally paraded through the main streets of the town.
