Case against BNP leaders in NCP leader Hasnat attack protested in Sreepur

A wave of outrage has erupted in the local political arena after several BNP leaders were named in a case filed over an attack on Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organizer of the South Region of the National Citizens' Party (NCP), in Gazipur.
Condemning the case as politically motivated, BNP leaders and activists held a protest and human chain in front of the Sreepur Model Police Station on Wednesday morning.
Some 300 BNP leaders, activists, and local residents joined the human chain. Speakers alleged that several BNP leaders, including Mazharul Islam Molla, Literature Affairs Secretary of Gazipur District Jubo Dal, and Shawkat Mir, former president of Bormi Degree College Chhatra Dal, were deliberately implicated in the case. They described the case as fabricated and driven by political vengeance.
The speakers further stated that those accused have long been involved in peaceful political activities in the area, and their sudden implication in such a case is part of a deep-rooted conspiracy. They demanded a fair investigation into the incident, immediate release of the innocent, and legal action against those responsible for filing the false case.
It is worth mentioning that on the evening of May 4, a group of miscreants on motorcycles attacked the convoy of NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah near Chandana Chowrasta in Gazipur. He was returning to Dhaka after attending an event near Salna Agricultural University when his vehicle was stuck in traffic and came under attack. During the assault, the attackers smashed the car windows and physically assaulted him. He was later taken to Dhaka with assistance from law enforcement.
Following the incident, NCP leader Sarjis Alam posted on social media seeking help and stated that a group of 10–12 assailants carried out the attack.
However, to much surprise, the case filed afterward included the names of nearly a hundred individuals. BNP leaders claim many of the accused were not even present at the scene during the incident. Based on the case, Gazipur Metropolitan Police conducted drives in various areas and arrested at least 54 people.
Local civic groups have expressed concern, saying, “If false cases are used to suppress political opposition, it raises serious questions about the future of justice in the country. Equal rights under the rule of law and democracy must be ensured for all citizens.”
