DIG assures garment workers’  security, urges factories to reopen

Ashulia (Savar) Correspondent:

Dhaka Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mostafizur Rahman has assured full security for garment workers in Ashulia, saying police are protecting factories, roads and workers’ residential areas.

He also assured that no innocent worker would be harassed and urged workers to return to work while calling on factory owners to reopen closed factories.

The DIG made the remarks while speaking to journalists in front of Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) on Thursday afternoon.

He said law enforcement agencies were working together to restore normalcy in industrial areas, including Gazipur, Narayanganj and Savar-Ashulia. Most factories are operating normally, while all factories inside DEPZ remain open.

Regarding the wage hike demand, he said a wage board was formed on November 1, and its first meeting was held on Wednesday.

Speaking about recent unrest, the DIG said 25 to 30 people had been arrested in connection with incidents in Ashulia and Savar. According to police, none of them were garment workers. Eight cases have been filed with Ashulia and Savar police stations.

He alleged that a group was exploiting workers’ emotions to create disorder and warned of strict legal action against those involved.

He further said police patrols and intelligence surveillance had been strengthened in workers’ residential areas to ensure their safety.

Describing garment workers as the country's economic warriors, Mostafizur Rahman urged workers, factory owners and local residents to maintain peace and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
