Memo submitted in protesting merging Ashashuni–Shyamnagar into single Constituency

A memorandum has been submitted to the Election Commissioner protesting the proposal to merge Ashashuni and Shyamnagar upazilas into a single parliamentary constituency.

On Friday, the memorandum was sent through the Ashashuni Upazila Nirbahi Officer, signed by several aggrieved individuals including N.A.M. Murtaza Ali, son of the late former Member of Parliament A.M. Riasat Ali Biswas. The memorandum stated that from the time of independence until 2008, Satkhira had two separate constituencies—Satkhira-3 (Ashashuni) and Satkhira-5 (Shyamnagar). Due to geographical distance, difficult communication systems, and the disaster-prone coastal environment, this division had been effective. However, later on, constituency boundaries were redrawn based on political considerations.

It further argued that merging Ashashuni and Shyamnagar into the proposed Satkhira-4 constituency would create a vast geographical area with numerous rivers, poor direct communication, and frequent embankment breaches, making it extremely challenging for a single Member of Parliament to manage. In the interest of development for nearly one million people, effective river erosion prevention, and proper disaster management, the memorandum demanded the reinstatement of two separate constituencies.
