
Munshiganj’s traditional sweet ‘Patkheer’ gets GI recognition

‘Patkheer’, a traditional sweet from Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj’ has been officially recognised as a Geographical Indication (GI) product.
The Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) handed over the GI certificate at an event titled “World Intellectual Property Day Discussion and GI Certificate Award Ceremony” held at the multipurpose hall of the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Wednesday.
Adviser to the Ministry of Industries Adilur Rahman Khan, and Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, jointly handed over the GI certificate to Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Fatema Tuj Zohra Jannat at the ceremony.
Presided over by Secretary to the Ministry of Industries Md Obaidur Rahman the event formally recognised several registered GI products from different regions of the country.
The sweet delicacy ‘Patkheer’ received its GI certificate for its historical and cultural significance.
Prepared with milk, a hint of turmeric powder, and sugar, the sweet has been made by local artisans for generations and holds a unique place in Munshiganj’s cultural heritage.
Its distinct taste, aroma, and quality set it apart from other sweets in the country.
