Munshiganj (South) Correspondent
As part of a declared program protesting an attack on leaders and activists of the National Citizens' Party (NCP) during a rally in Gopalganj, members of the party and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement staged a demonstration at the Mawa end of the Padma Bridge near the Padma Bridge North Police Station in Munshiganj.
As a result, southbound traffic on the bridge was halted for about 30 minutes. Later, around 6:00 PM, the protestors moved to the side of the highway, allowing traffic to resume.
According to police and eyewitnesses, after the program was announced, the demonstrators occupied the southbound lane of the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway near the Padma Bridge North Police Station around 5:00 PM on Wednesday. This began to disrupt traffic flow, and by 5:30 PM, vehicular movement on the Padma Bridge came to a complete halt. Passengers traveling to southern districts suffered due to the blockade. Eventually, around 6:00 PM, the protestors moved from the highway.
Ibrahim Nirab, Executive Member of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, stated that considering public inconvenience, the blockade was withdrawn and the demonstrators relocated to the side of the highway. He said they would remain there until further instructions are given.
Regarding the incident, OC of Padma Bridge North Police Station Zakir Hossain confirmed that southbound traffic was stopped for about 30 minutes but has now returned to normal as the demonstrators have left the highway.
