On the occasion of National Fisheries Week, a rally and discussion meeting were held in Dohar. With the theme “Let’s establish sanctuaries, fill the country with native fish,” the rally started on Monday morning from the office of UNO,  paraded through the main streets of the town, and ended with the release of fish fry in the pond of the Sadar UNO office.

Later, a discussion meeting was held at the Upazila Parishad auditorium, presided over by District Fisheries Officer Shirin Sultana Munni. UNO  and Municipality Administrator Tania Tabassum was present as the chief guest.

The event was organized by the Upazila Administration and the Upazila Fisheries Office. It was conducted by Md. Sekendar Ali, Manager of the Government Fish Fry Production Center. Three fish farmers were awarded for their special contributions to fish farming.

Speakers at the meeting said that fish are our wealth. Through fish farming, it is possible to ensure employment, meet nutritional needs, and alleviate poverty.

At the meeting, District Fisheries Officer H.M. Badruzzaman stated that the annual demand for fish in the district is 16,500 metric tons. Surpassing this demand, the district produces an additional 2,000 metric tons of fish annually, which is supplied to other districts as well as exported abroad.
