Traditional boat race held in Rupganj after 15 years

A traditional boat race was held in Rupganj after a gap of 15 years, drawing thousands of enthusiastic spectators to both banks of the Shitalakkhya River on Saturday.
The race was organised by Kanchan Pourashava BNP and took place from Shimulia Ghat to Kanchan Bazar Ghat. From the morning, people from Dighulia, Kerabo, Kalatali, Banti, Kanchan and neighbouring areas began gathering along the river to enjoy the traditional sporting event. Many spectators also watched the race from boats and trawlers on the river.
Once a popular monsoon tradition in the rivers, canals and wetlands of Rupganj, boat racing has gradually declined due to the filling of water bodies, reduced navigability of rivers and the development of housing projects.
The event created a festive atmosphere across the area. According to the organisers, 25 boats of different sizes took part in this year's competition. Attractive prizes, including motorcycles, refrigerators and televisions, were awarded to the winners.
Kalatali Sohel Rana Express emerged champion, while Kaladi Sathi Express secured second place and Kerabo Sobar Bondhu finished third.
Narayanganj-1 (Rupganj) MP Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan Dipu attended the event as the chief guest and later handed over prizes to the winners.
Spectators expressed their happiness at seeing the traditional boat race return after 15 years. Many said such sporting events could help keep young people away from drugs and encourage them to participate in healthy recreational activities.
Speaking at the event, MP Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan Dipu said, “We have to revive the traditional sports of the past. There is no alternative to sports to protect the younger generation from drugs. The traditional boat race will be organised every year while ensuring proper water flow. Next year, instead of only sitting on the stage, I will also try to participate in the boat race myself.”
The colourful event brought back a festive atmosphere along the Shitalakkhya River, with huge crowds gathering on both banks and spectators following the race from boats and trawlers. Local residents expressed hope that the traditional competition would be organised regularly in the future.
