Classes were in progress when suddenly a strong stench, resembling the smell of pesticide, spread inside the classroom. As a result, 20 students fell ill. The situation worsened quickly, prompting the authorities to declare the school closed immediately. Around 10 to 12 students received primary treatment from a local village doctor, while eight were admitted to the local hospital.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at  9:45 a.m. at Narikelbari High School in Kotalipara upazila of Gopalganj.

The eight students admitted to the 100-bed Kotalipara Health Complex are now undergoing treatment. The incident has left teachers, students, and guardians deeply concerned.

The hospitalized students are: hilick Baidya (14), Abdullah Khondokar (12), son of Rafiqul Islam, Smriti (9), daughter of Suranjan Baidya, Jhuma Barai (13), daughter of Abir Barai of Bodrotola, Rodela (14), daughter of Makhan Lal of Hajrabari village, Riantah Mir (16), daughter of Lutfar Mir of Bhuterbari village and  Rita Halder (14), Class VIII.

Supriya Khanam (12), a Class VIII student, said, ater the first period ended, our math class had just begun on the second floor of the new building. Around 10 to 15 minutes into the class, a toxic smell suddenly entered through the window. It felt like we couldn’t breathe. We rushed downstairs to the schoolyard, but by then, some students had already fallen sick.

Mary Derabati, head teacher of Narikelbari High School, said, I was on a round in the adjacent building when I heard the commotion. As I rushed over, I saw everyone running out. The assistant head teacher, Dulal Modhu, informed me that the classroom was filled with a pesticide-like smell. We immediately searched the premises to trace the source, but no origin was found. The school was closed right away, and the students who were unwell were sent to the upazila health complex.

Dr. Kumar Mridul Das, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer of Kotalipara, said, students were admitted with complaints of breathing difficulty. We have given them primary treatment and kept them under observation. It is possible that the foul smell caused panic, which led to their illness. However, there is no cause for alarm.
