The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized a cargo boat carrying 40,000 kilograms (800 bags) of cement intended for smuggling into Myanmar during a drive in the Karnaphuli Channel near Patenga.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said this in a press release on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Coast Guard sources, a team from Coast Guard Outpost Patenga conducted a special operation around 1:00 AM on Tuesday near No. 12 Ghat along the Karnaphuli Channel under Patenga Police Station based on confidential information.
Upon searching a suspicious cargo boat, officers seized 800 bags of cement valued at approximately Tk 4 lakh. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the smugglers fled the scene, preventing any arrests during the drive.
Legal proceedings regarding the seized cargo boat and cement have been taken.
The Coast Guard will continue its strict anti-smuggling operations across coastal regions to prevent illicit trade, the press release added.
