The High Court has issued a rule to the Election Commission on the reinstatement of three parliamentary seats in Barguna district. The Election Commission's Chief Election Commissioner has been asked to respond to why the three parliamentary seats of Barguna will not be returned within the next two weeks.

On Wednesday,  a joint bench of the vacation High Court. Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Biswajit Debnath issued the rule.

It is reported that Barguna, the coastal district of the country, is comprised of six upazilas. The area is 1.5 sq km. The population is about 12 lakh. The district divides the pigeons (Buriswar) and the poisonous rivers. Amtali and Taltali upazilas on the east side of the Pigera river, Sadar and Betagi upazilas on the west side. Patharghata and Bamna upazilas are located on the west of the Poison River. Since independence, there were three parliamentary seats in Barguna district. Among them, Barguna-1, Patharghata and Bamna with Barguna Sadar and Betagi were formed with Barguna-2 and Amtali and Taltali.

But on July 7, the Election Commission, supported by the then 1/3 government, abused the Awami League and converted three seats to Barguna by breaking the three seats. At that time, Barguna-1 and Barguna-2 were taken with Barguna-1 and Patharghata, Betagi and Bamna upazilas with Barguna Sadar, Amtali and Taltali upazilas. As a result, the development and representation of 1.5 lakh people in the district was deprived.

Recently, the Election Commission released the draft gazette without reinstating three seats in Barguna. Later on August 5, three people submitted their applications demanding the return of three seats in Barguna. The matter was heard on August 25. However, on September 3, the Election Commission published the Gazette without reinstating the old three seats. Angry at this, Omar Abdullah Shaheen, a citizen of Taltali Upazila, filed a writ petition in the High Court on September 7.

Writer Omar Abdullah Shaheen said that since independence, there were three independent seats in Barguna till the Eighth Parliament elections. But during the 1/3 government period it was reduced. In this, 1.5 million people in the district have lost their fundamental rights and representation in the National Assembly. So I went to court to regain rights.

Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal, a lawyer for the petitioner, said the court had issued a rule to the Election Commission after hearing. The Commission will have to respond in the next two weeks.
