Mobs and juvenile gangs: A terrible social disease

Shudir Baran Mazi

Recently, mobs and juvenile gangs have increased at an alarming rate in various parts of the country, including Comilla. Fear and panic are increasing. Robberies, thefts, extortions, and extortion have become daily occurrences in the capital Dhaka and other parts of the country. In the last 10 months, at least 174 people have been killed by creating 'mobs' across the country. Despite the interim government's repeated strict stance against 'mob violence', there is no effective result. According to official data, 2,809 serious crimes were committed across the country in May. Which is at least 564 more than last year. Mobs and juvenile gangs cannot be desirable in any way. Nevertheless, it is important to quickly bring those who are creating mobs just to achieve their own interests under the law. Mobs and juvenile gangs have become a terrible social disease in today's society. Mobs and juvenile gangs are a name of fear. Mobs and juvenile gangs are becoming more dangerous day by day. Looking at the current situation, it seems that mobs and juvenile gangs will take a permanent shape in family and social chaos. Personal, family and social insecurity, health risks, and economic crises are increasing. Some people are using mobs and juvenile gangs in an emerging situation to achieve their personal interests. Currently, mobs and juvenile gangs have taken the form of a terrible terror in our society. Day by day, these gangs are becoming more reckless and violent. They are not only a threat to law and order, but are also causing terrible havoc in family and social stability. Which has become an extreme threat not only to individuals, but also to the entire society and the state. As a result of this gang culture, mutual distrust, violence, and criminality are increasing in society. The involvement of adolescents in such crimes is also darkening their future. At the same time, economic crises and mental instability are emerging in society due to crime, drug addiction, and violence arising from this. Mobs are a group of crazy people who take the law into their own hands out of emotion and excitement. On the other hand, juvenile gangs are organized juvenile criminal groups that are involved in crimes such as extortion, robbery, drug use and sale, terrorism, and even murder. The misdeeds of mobs and juvenile gangs are increasing unrest, chaos, and insecurity in society. Many families are worried about their children—the future is heading towards uncertainty.

What is more worrying is that some unscrupulous individuals and groups are using mobs and juvenile gangs as tools to achieve their own interests. They are also being used for political interests, suppressing opponents, or seizing resources. This gang culture has now severely threatened not only the law and order situation, but also the family and social structure. They are using these gangs as a kind of 'weapon' to gain political or economic benefits. This is creating a kind of undeclared anarchy in society. The trust of the general public in the law and order forces is also decreasing. Mobs and juvenile gangs have emerged as a terrible and growing social problem in today's society. Their activities are becoming more dangerous from day to day. Mob means the stubborn reaction of an agitated crowd, which often takes the form of violence like taking the law into their own hands. On the other hand, a juvenile gang refers to a criminal group of teenage boys who are involved in various crimes - such as robbery, extortion, drug use and sale, terrorism, and even murder. In many cases of mob lynching or juvenile gang violence, the police administration arrives late at the scene or is slow to take legal action. As a result, trust in the law and justice system decreases in the minds of the general public. Mob justice becomes a kind of 'alternative justice' system. However, it is a terrible danger for society. Similarly, juvenile gang members often take the opportunity to get exemption by showing their young age. Sometimes, under the umbrella of 'powerful' people, they escape the law. Therefore, the application of the law must be strict on one hand, and humane on the other. Criminal juveniles must not only be punished, but also given the opportunity to be rehabilitated.

To get rid of this, we need a conscious family, a responsible education system, strict law enforcement, and the practice of moral and human values at all levels of society. There is a need for widespread social awareness, education of values in the family, moral education in schools, and timely law enforcement. Parents need to be aware of where their children are going, who they are associating with, and what kind of activities they are involved in online or offline. At the same time, the law enforcement agencies of the state need to be more active and responsible. Initiatives must be taken to rehabilitate teenagers so that they can return to normal life. Mobs and teenage gangs cannot be suppressed with law alone, for this we need a comprehensive social movement and sense of responsibility. Only then will a safe, stable, and humane society be built. Education forms the foundation of human character and morality. But unfortunately, many teenagers in our country are deprived of the necessary moral education and mental development. They are not getting education in values, responsibility, and empathy outside of textbooks. There is no discipline in many schools, and violence among classmates is increasing. There is a growing tendency for students to gang up, dominate, and seek solutions to problems through force in educational institutions. If teachers are only satisfied with good results in exams, but do not pay attention to the changes in the student's psyche, then it will be difficult to prevent the spread of this gang culture. Currently, many parents are not able to give enough time and attention to their children. Family ties are weakening, there is a lack of monitoring of what the child is doing, who he is mingling with, where he is going. Again, violence, quarrels, or neglect in many families mentally upset teenagers, which pushes them on the wrong path. If the child does not get the right guidance, he can easily be attracted to the wrong friends, drugs, violence, or gangs outside. Therefore, the family should create an environment of love, discipline, and responsibility.

This is a problem of the entire society. Not just families, teachers or police - everyone has to work together. A collective social movement is needed, the foundation of which will be - conscious families, responsible education, strict and humane law enforcement, and the practice of moral and humane values at all levels. Moral education, education of compassion and responsibility must be made mandatory in schools. A big problem in our society is - remaining silent even when seeing injustice. Teenage gangs are formed on an area-based, neighborhood-based or within schools. If local people, teachers, imams, social workers - they come forward together, then it is easier to quickly identify the problem and deal with it. Media, social media are also important in this regard. It is important not to glorify gang members, but to highlight the terrible consequences. At the same time, justice and humane values must be awakened in society. In addition to stopping political telepathy, political awareness and political unity must be built. Mobs and teenage gangs are not an immediate problem—they are a deep social disease, rooted in our education, family, law, and society. Therefore, to address this crisis, we need collective efforts, well-planned education, vigilant families, effective laws, and an aware society. Only then will we be able to build a safe, healthy, and humane Bangladesh.
