Mongla Port sets revenue record, unlocks new economic prospects in southwest

 S.M. Saiful Islam Kabir,  Sundarbans

Located on the coast of  Sundarbans, Mongla Port in Bagerhat was once known merely as an export-oriented port.

Today, it has emerged as a name of vast potential. The port is gradually becoming a central hub driving Bangladesh’s economic engine.

The remarkable revenue earned during the 2024–25 fiscal year is a testament to that transformation. Looking ahead, Mongla Port is poised to write a new chapter as the economic "hub" of southern Bangladesh.

Over the past few years, revolutionary steps have been taken to upgrade the port’s infrastructure and enhance its capacity, leading to increased interest from both domestic and foreign investors. With improved connectivity to Dhaka, the capital, the strategic importance of Mongla Port has significantly multiplied. It is now reshaping not only the trade dynamics of the south but also of the entire country.

According to port sources, several factors contributed to the revenue surge in FY 2024–25. These  long-term planning and effective management by the Mongla Port Authority ( MPA) include cnstruction of new jetties and yards, addition of modern equipment, enhanced connectivity through river routes, upgraded roads, and newly introduced railway access, introduction of a one-stop service system for faster customer service and strengthened security measures for cargo unloading and transportation

The MPA  continues to work relentlessly to maintain this momentum.

The port’s upcoming plans include increasing its capacity further. Dredging the channel to allow larger vessels, constructing specialized jetties for specific types of cargo, and building new container terminals and yards under a G2G agreement with China are already in the pipeline.

Due to adequate car yards, sheds, warehouses, and low space rental costs, 55% of the reconditioned vehicles imported into the country are now being cleared through Mongla Port. This forward march of the port not only fuels economic growth but also contributes significantly to improving the standard of living in southern Bangladesh—by creating jobs and boosting trade. It stands as a symbol of dream realization for the region.

Prepared to become the economic nerve center of the south, Mongla Port is determined to unlock new horizons. It is one of Khulna’s prime attractions and the second seaport of Bangladesh.

Record-breaking revenue :

Chief Financial Officer Siddiqur Rahman reported that the revenue target for FY 2024–25 was set at BDT 3,338.7 million. The actual revenue achieved was BDT 3,433.3 million—BDT 94.6 million or 2.83% above the target.

Deputy Director Md. Makruzzaman noted that following the assumption of office by interim government’s Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, steps have been taken to enhance transparency and accountability at the port. Additionally, the Ministry of Shipping's Advisor, Brigadier General (Retd.) M. Sakhawat Hossain, and other ministry officials have frequently visited the port and issued guidance on expanding port operations. Their timely advice played a crucial role in achieving this year’s revenue goals.

Stakeholder collaboration & operational excellence :

Rear Admiral Shaheen Rahman, Chairman of the Mongla Port Authority, attributed the success to effective stakeholder engagement including shipping agents, C&F agents, stevedores, and others. The formation of a permanent internal business development committee has led to increased vessel arrivals. Currently, there is no vessel congestion at the port. Mongla also provides special benefits to vehicle importers and has seven container yards available for handling cargo efficiently.
