Protests across Nilphamari demanding release of Khaleda Zia’s nephew Tuhin

Leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated bodies across Nilphamari district have staged protest marches demanding the release of Engineer Shaharin Islam Chowdhury Tuhin — nephew of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, former MP of Nilphamari-1 (Domar-Dimla), member of the BNP Central Executive Committee, and former President of Nilphamari District BNP.
On Tuesday (April 29), BNP leaders and activists from Dimla, Domar, and Jaldhaka upazilas, along with district BNP, organized protest processions in their respective areas. In addition, similar demonstrations were held at the union level across the district. Protesters strongly demanded Tuhin's unconditional release and dismissal of what they claim are false charges against him.
In 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed two separate cases with Gulshan Police Station against Tuhin on charges of tax evasion and illegal wealth accumulation. In 2008, he was sentenced to a total of eight years of rigorous imprisonment in the tax evasion case — three years under one section and five years under another, to run concurrently, meaning he would serve a maximum of five years. In the same year, he was sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment in the illegal wealth case.
Seventeen years after the verdict, on Tuesday (April 29), Tuhin surrendered before two separate special courts in Dhaka through his lawyer and sought bail. However, the court denied his bail plea and ordered his imprisonment. During the court proceedings, many BNP leaders and activists present at the premises chanted slogans demanding his immediate and unconditional release.
