Sugarcane cultivation returns hope to Lalmonirhat farmers

Sabbir Hossain, Hatibandha (Lalmonirhat

Lalmonirhat in northern Bangladesh is famous for its fertile land. Sugarcane is one of the main crops here, used to make molasses, sugar, and juice. It gives income to farmers and jobs to many local people.

In recent years, sugarcane farming has decreased because sugar mills were closed. In 2024, only 36,500 hectares were used for sugarcane, while before it was over 50,000 hectares. Now the government plans to reopen the mills, and farmers are hopeful again.

One hectare of land produces about 52 tons of sugarcane and 4 tons of molasses. The cost is Tk 1.8–2 lakh per hectare, but farmers can profit if they get fair prices.

Farmer Abed Ali said, “We never stopped growing sugarcane. If the mills reopen, it will be a blessing.”

Agriculture Officer Dr. Saikhul Arifin added, “Sugarcane demand will rise when the mills start again.”

Sugarcane farming not only helps farmers earn but also boosts the local economy through jobs and trade.
