Bridge approach road collapsed in Kotalipara

Hridoy Howlader, Kotalipara  (Gopalgonj

The approach roads of the Wabdar Hat Bridge in Kotalipara upazila of Gopalganj have collapsed, creating deep craters that have turned the bridge into a death trap for commuters. More than 50,000 people from four unions are suffering as they are forced to travel through this risky route every day.

The bridge, built nearly three decades ago by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) over the Poysarhat canal, is a vital link for Amtoli, Radhaganj, Shuyagram, and Ramshil unions. Around 15 villages, along with at least six educational institutions—including 50 No. Purbo Para Shantikuteer Government Primary School—depend on the bridge.

Wabdar Hat Bazar, located beside the bridge, draws crowds of buyers and sellers from morning until night. But the collapse of the approaches has restricted the movement of trucks, pickups, and local vehicles such as Nosimon and Mahindra. This has caused immense suffering for traders and disrupted the supply of construction materials in the area.

“Due to soil erosion beneath the northern approach, the road has developed deep potholes. Accidents occur frequently, and at night vans often overturn after falling into them,” said Nazrul Islam Mohin, Organizing Secretary of Kotalipara Upazila BNP.

Local Union Parishad member Hannan Mia Santu said a written appeal has already been submitted to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) for urgent repairs.

UNO (Acting) Md. Masum Billah confirmed receiving the application. “The LGED office has been directed to take immediate steps for repair. We expect the problem will be resolved soon,” he assured.
