Coast Guard detains five with dredger for illegal sand extraction in Pathorghata

The Bangladesh Coast Guard detained five individuals along with a sand-extracting dredger for illegally dredging sand from a canal in Pathorghata upazila of Barguna.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, media officer for the Coast Guard, disclosed the information in a press release on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Coast Guard, acting on a tip-off, a special team from Coast Guard Station Pathorghata conducted an operation at approximately 12:00 PM on Thursday in the Pathorghata canal area adjacent to the Dulal Dock. During the raid, security personnel caught five individuals red-handed while they were illegally extracting sand using a dredger.
The seized dredger and the detained suspects were subsequently handed over to the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) in Barguna for the initiation of necessary legal action.
The Coast Guard reiterated that its operations against illegal sand extractors will continue to protect the crop lands and homesteads of riverbank communities, the press release added.
