
DU VC meets Home Adviser : Call to ensure swift justice for Samy’s murder; decision taken to evict bagrants from campus

A five-member delegation led by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan met with Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury at the Secretariat on Sunday to ensure swift and fair justice for the murder of meritorious student Shahriar Alam Samy.
The delegation included the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Md. Khoda Baksh Chowdhury, Director of the Institute of Education and Research Prof Dr. Hosne Ara Begum, Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, Samy’s friend and eyewitness Ashraful Alam Rafi, and another friend, S.M. Nahiyan Islam.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan stated, “We seek fair justice for Samy’s murder. As part of our ongoing efforts to expedite this process, we met with the Home Affairs Adviser today and requested assistance in swiftly arresting and bringing the culprits to justice.” He added that the Adviser informed them that the case is being transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) and assured prompt arrests of the perpetrators.
In a separate meeting held in the afternoon at the Vice-Chancellor’s office to ensure the overall safety of students on campus, chaired by Prof Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, several key decisions were made. Attendees included Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin ) Prof Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Prof Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Proctor Associate Prof Saifuddin Ahmed, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Md. Nazrul Islam, Chief Executive Officer of Dhaka South City Corporation Dr. Md. Jillur Rahman, Dhaka University’s Chief Engineer Kazi Md. Akram Hossain, Superintending Engineer Md. Meraj Uddin (Circle-1), Md. Ahsan Habib (Electricity, Zone-1/C), and Convener of the Ramna Kali Mandir Puja Celebration Committee Aparna Roy Das, along with other committee members.
The meeting discussed installing sufficient CCTV cameras and strengthening security measures around the Kali Mandir and adjacent areas.
A decision was made to intensify searches to evict vagrants and unauthorized individuals from the Dhaka University campus. Additionally, a request was made to Dhaka South City Corporation to relocate the stairs of the foot overbridge near Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall, shifting one end to the interior of the hall and the other to the interior of Curzon Hall. Dhaka South City Corporation confirmed that this initiative would be implemented soon.
