Expatriate commits suicide in Sonaimuri  over blackmail,  property dispute

Noakhali Correspondent

In the suicide case of Saudi expatriate Nahidul Islam Rakib in Sonaimuri, Noakhali, allegations of blackmail and money demand by recording a video of him consuming drugs have been raised. At the same time, his wife Sultana Islam Meem has demanded an impartial investigation, alleging disputes over family property, harassment and incitement to suicide.

Sultana Islam Meem made these allegations in a written statement at a press conference organized at the office of a national daily newspaper in the district town of Maizdi on Wednesday (September 30) morning.

Nahidul Islam Rakib's two children, Fatima Islam Muskan and Abdullah Islam Arfin, were present at the press conference.

In a written statement, Meem said that her husband Rakib was under stress due to various family disputes after returning home from Saudi Arabia on July 6. Rakib had told her that a video was secretly recorded while he was consuming drugs with his friends Khorshed Alam Babu, Mehedi Hasan Sagar and some others.

She claims that his distant uncle Sheikh Sahab Uddin demanded a large sum of money from Rakib by showing him the video. Rakib also told him that he was being blackmailed by threatening to release the video. Rakib became mentally disturbed by the incident and also announced his plans to return to Saudi Arabia with his wife and children.

Meem also said that on July 10, Sheikh Sahab Uddin called Rakib on Messenger and demanded money. Later, under pressure, Rakib gave him Tk 50,000. On July 13, when Meem asked her husband to accompany her before going to her sister's house with her two children,

The next day, when Mim returned home, she found the door locked from the inside. Later, in the presence of family members, she broke the door and entered and found Rakib hanging. The police recovered the body, conducted an autopsy, and handed it over to the family.

Rakib's wife Meem also alleged that her husband was a drug addict. Because of this, his family members used to harass him at various times. After the death of his in-laws, they were separated from the family.

Meem alleged that when Rakib asked for a portion of the family property to go abroad to alleviate unemployment, some family members, including his uncle Helal Uddin, Mosharraf, sister Sweety Akhter and aunt Rina Akhter, began beating and mentally torturing him.
She  claims that the accused then became even angrier and pressured Rakib to register a second-floor flat in their name instead of the shop.

She alleged that she and her children were being harassed in various ways after her husband's death due to a dispute over family property. She has been accused in a case of abetting her husband's suicide, alleging that she was having an extramarital affair with one of her husband's friends, Nafi Ahmed Faiz

Meem alleged that while she was in prison, her daughter was taken out of her husband's house and locked in the house on August 21. Her father has filed a written complaint with the Noakhali Superintendent of Police regarding the incident. However, no effective action has been taken by the police.

Meem sought the administration's intervention to ensure the safety of her two children, protect the children's fair rights to the property left by her husband, and uncover the real cause of Nahidul Islam Rakib's death.
