Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir on Wednesday said that the capital city of Dhaka would gradually expand up to Purbachal, helping materialise the government's long-term planned urbanisation strategy.

He made the remarks while inaugurating the Borkau Police Camp under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in Sector-1 of Purbachal New Town on Wednesday morning.

DMP Commissioner Mosleh Ahmed, senior officials of Bangladesh Police and the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), among others, were present at the inauguration ceremony.

Addressing the programme, the IGP said the Purbachal New Town Project had been developed to reduce the growing pressure on Dhaka city. The new township will fall under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and the Dhaka North City Corporation.

To ensure law and order and provide comprehensive security for the rapidly developing township, the Borkau Police Camp has officially been launched in Sector-1 of Purbachal.

The IGP said a separate police division would be established in the future under the supervision of an Additional Police Commissioner. A proposal has already been made to recruit around 6,524 police personnel for the division.

He also announced that the under-construction Parshi Police Camp would become operational within the next two months. Once completed, it would further strengthen policing in the area and facilitate the planned expansion of Dhaka city up to Purbachal, in line with the government's long-term urban development vision.

The police chief further said the government has taken a policy decision to establish four police stations, six investigation centres, two police lines, three deputy commissioner offices and 41 police boxes under the Purbachal New Town Project to ensure effective law enforcement and public safety.
