
Naval police seized huge quantity of fishing nets in Padma operation, burnt

The administration and police have seized, burned and destroyed a large amount of illegal and prohibited electricity nets during a raid on the Padma River in Goalando Upazila of Rajbari.
A team from the Daulatdia Naval Police Outpost conducted the operation on Saturday from 9 am to 12 pm.
During the operation, 250,000 square meters of ownerless current nets were seized from Kalabagan area of Daulatdia Union of the upazila. Later, these nets were destroyed by burning in front of the Daulatdia Naval Police Outpost in public. UNO Md. Nahidur Rahman was present during the burning of the nets.
The operation in the river was conducted by Trinath Saha, in-charge of Daulatdia Naval Police Outpost. SI Mehedi Hasan Apurba and other members of the police outpost were present at the time.
Trinath Saha, in-charge of the Naval Police Outpost, said, "To protect native fish, we conducted a drive from Kalabagan on the Padma River and seized and destroyed the banned current nets by burning them. We are conducting regular drives. Fishermen should not use banned nets."
UNO Nahidur Rahman said, "During the Daulatdia Naval Police operation to destroy illegal current nets in the Padma River, 250,000 square meters of nets were seized and burned in public. It is prohibited to use these illegal nets, even small fish cannot survive from these nets, our operation will continue to protect domestic fish. Fishermen should not use the nets that are prohibited in the river."
Meanwhile, locals have welcomed the administration's initiative. They said such campaigns should be regular to protect local fish, including hilsa.
