Residents block road in protest : N'ganj Panchayat leaders threatened
Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj
Drug dealers and their associates have allegedly threatened the secretary and leaders of a local panchayat council in Narayanganj’s Chashara Bage Jannat area after they carried out an anti-drug and anti-teen gang campaign.
Around 10:30pm on Wednesday, several accused went to the residence of Panchayat Secretary Mohiuddin Mahmud, hurled abuse at him, and threatened to “teach him a lesson.” They also kicked the main gate and threw stones in an apparent attempt to spread fear.
Hearing of the incident, locals took to the streets, blocking Nawab Salimullah Road, and marched in protest up to Missionpara. The blockade was lifted after police assured action.
Residents said drug peddling by outsiders and nuisance by teen gangs have increased in recent months near Mount Royal School, Shishu Kalyan School, and the Missionpara link road. On Tuesday night, panchayat leaders conducted an anti-drug and anti-crime patrol in these areas, urging community resistance.
“We are united against drug dealers and criminals. Threats will not intimidate us,” Mohiuddin Mahmud told this correspondent.
