We must unite beyond divisions to ensure BNP’s victory : Mayor Dr. Shahadat
Chattogram Bureau
Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation and former President of Chattogram Metropolitan BNP, Dr. Shahadat Hossain, has called upon everyone to work together, setting aside all differences, to elect the BNP in the upcoming national election and restore the country to the path of democracy.
He stated that from the cordial meeting held last Friday between Tarique Rahman and the head adviser of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, a clear political message has emerged: a participatory national election is set to take place in February 2026.
Under the leadership of BNP's Acting Chairman and national leader Tarique Rahman, the foundation for forming a democratic government through national unity has been clearly laid. Everyone must now work collectively, rising above divisions, to ensure the victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and bring the country back to democratic governance. He emphasized the need to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty under BNP’s leadership and restore the rights and dignity of the people.
Dr. Hossain made these remarks on Saturday during an Eid reunion event hosted for city residents at the Saronika Community Center in Love Lane, Chattogram, following the holy Eid-ul-Azha.
The event was attended by central BNP leaders, journalists, doctors, teachers, engineers, people from different communities and professions, grassroots leaders and activists of Chattogram BNP, and people from all walks of life. Traditional Mezbani food, a hallmark of Chattogram, was served to the guests, with special arrangements made for people of other communities. The gathering turned into a grand reunion with the presence of thousands.
The event began with special prayers for the soul of martyred President Ziaur Rahman, for the quick recovery of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, and for the good health of Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Dr. Shahadat Hossain said that over the past 16 years, thousands of BNP leaders and activists have endured lawsuits, attacks, and repression, yet remained steadfast in the democratic movement of the party. None have defected to the Awami League. These self-sacrificing individuals will lead the party in the coming days.
He warned that those who joined the party after August 5 and are now creating confusion must be dealt with cautiously. Anyone with proven links to the Awami League should be removed from party positions. To strengthen the BNP, the sacrifices of grassroots leaders must be recognized. If there is any evidence of someone’s involvement with the fascist Awami League, such evidence should be submitted to the central or city office. He emphasized, "Only those who have struggled over the past 16 years will hold positions; we will not tolerate opportunists."
He added, "We want a united BNP that will build a corruption-free, prosperous Bangladesh based on national unity. Following the 19-point program of Shaheed President Zia and implementing BNP's announced 31-point agenda, we aim to achieve this goal. We will respond to 16 years of oppression by realizing the 31-point plan."
BNP Vice Chairman Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury, Advisor to the BNP Chairperson Dr. Sukomal Barua, BNP Central Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Labor Affairs Secretary A.M. Nazim Uddin, Metropolitan BNP Convenor Alhaj Ershad Ullah, former Central Organizing Secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar, Central BNP members Shamsul Alam and Hommam Quader Chowdhury, former South District BNP Convenor Abu Sufian, Chattogram Press Club Secretary Zahidul Karim Kochi, Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad Secretary Dr. Khurshid Jamil Chowdhury, and former Bar Council member Adv Badrul Anwar spoke.
