Human chain formed on. banks of Teesta  demanding speedy implementation of Teesta Master Plan

Md. Lavlu Sheikh Lalmonirhat.

The Teesta Master Plan Implementation Movement Committee, Lalmonirhat District Branch, has made 5-point demands demanding the speedy implementation of the Teesta Master Plan and ensuring a fair share of the Teesta River water. To achieve these demands, a huge human chain program has been announced on June 20, 2026, from Bhotmari to Bhutlarhat to the banks of the Teesta River in Shaulmari.

To that end, the organization's convener, Advocate Md. Firoz Haider Lavlu, announced the program through a press conference at the Hasanul Banna Auditorium in Lalmonirhat on Friday at 11 am.

It was informed in a written statement at the press conference. The Teesta River is the lifeblood of the livelihood, agriculture, environment and economy of crores of people in the northern region. But despite the movement demanding a fair share of Teesta water and an integrated river management for more than 4 decades, no permanent and effective solution has been implemented till date. As a result, Teesta experiences extreme floods every dry season, water crisis occurs and agricultural production is severely disrupted.

On the other hand, during the rainy season, the river floods, causing a terrible situation for the public life on both banks and making lakhs of people homeless and victims of various disasters.

The written statement further mentioned that the 1996 Ganga Water Sharing Agreement is going to expire in December 2026. In that context, the issue of Teesta water sharing needs to be considered more seriously. The speakers expressed regret that although a temporary agreement was prepared at the Joint River Commission meeting in 1983 and a draft of a permanent agreement was prepared in 2011, it has not seen the light of day.
Although various large projects have been prioritized in the National Development Plan, the Teesta Master Plan is still awaiting a final decision.

Declaring the Teesta Master Plan as a 'National Priority Project'..publish a specific roadmap for rapid approval, financing, and implementation of projects.
Adopt a sustainable river management plan, giving utmost importance to the opinions and interests of the people of Teestabank.
