A case has been filed in Tahirpur of Sunamganj on charges of instigating suicide on Thursday night.
The victim’s father filed the case at Tahirpur police station.
In it, a youth named Akib (25) has been accused.
Earlier, on the night of 26 June, the newlywed bride committed suicide by hanging herself with a scarf from a mango tree next to the house.
Deceased Achia Khatun was the daughter of Akbar Ali of Ratanpur village in Haor-Simanto area (Bagli) of Uttar Sripur Union under Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj. She was married in June of this year. The sole accused in the case, Akib, is the son of Manjul Mia of Rongachhara in Simantogram (Bagli) of the same union.
On Saturday morning, Sunamganj District Police Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Zakir Hossain confirmed the matter of the case.
According to the case and the family of the deceased bride, at the beginning of June, Achia was married to a youth from Mohonpur of Simantogram under Madhyanagar upazila. On 22 June, the newlywed came to her father’s house in Ratanpur to visit. The next day, falling into the lure of marriage again, Achia eloped with Akib. Four days after eloping, on 26 June, Akib left Achia in front of her father’s house and fled.
The matter became known among the husband’s family, relatives, and villagers. Unable to bear the humiliation, on the night of 26 June, Achia committed suicide by hanging herself with a scarf from a mango tree next to the house.
Akbar Ali said, “I am a working man. With the help of relatives and taking loans, I married off my daughter. I married my daughter 20 days before the suicide. But youth Akib from the neighboring village enticed my daughter with the lure of marriage and eloped with her. I did not know there was a love affair between them. After staying together for four days, Akib left my daughter in front of the house and ran away. After that my daughter was compelled to commit suicide.”
When contacted on Akib’s mobile number, it was found switched off. Akib’s father Manjul Mia said, “There has been no trace of Akib for several days. Since knowing about the case, I have been trying for a settlement.”
Investigating officer of the case SI Abir Dash said, “As the accused is in hiding, it has not been possible to arrest him. Attempts are ongoing to arrest him.”
