Coast Guard seized huge quantity of banned polythene in Chawkbazar

The Bangladesh Coast Guard seized a massive quantity of banned polythene bags during a late-night anti-smuggling and environmental protection drive in the capital's Chawkbazar area.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, media officer for the Coast Guard, disclosed the information in a press release on Saturday evening

According to the Coast Guard, acting on a tip-off, a special operation was conducted by Coast Guard Station Pagla from 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM on Saturday near the Nurjahan Market area adjacent to the Buriganga River under Chawkbazar Police Station. During the raid, security personnel intercepted a suspicious truck and searched it, recovering 9,600 kilograms of banned polythene with an estimated market value of Tk 14.4 million.

Subsequently, the seized polythene was handed over to the Department of Environment in Narayanganj for destruction. The truck, along with its driver and helper, was released after obtaining formal undertakings (mochleka).

The Coast Guard reiterated that its operations to protect the environment will continue, the press release added.
