The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sunamganj seized 2,000 illegal Kiron Mala (plastic fishing nets) from the ecologically protected wetland of Tanguar Haor, which is listed under the Ramsar Convention.
On Sunday afternoon (3 August), DC Dr. Mohammad Elias Mia conducted the operation near Manikkhila village of Tahirpur upazila. The nets were confiscated while being used for illegal fishing in the reserved area of the Haor.
Later, in the presence of local villagers, the seized nets were burned and destroyed on the spot.
Tahirpur UNO Md. Abul Hashem, Executive Magistrate of the DC office Shakib Khan, and other officials were present during the operation.
