
Human rights situation report on Gaibandha district released

A views exchange meeting on the release of the “Gaibandha District Human Rights Situation Report” was held on Saturday morning at the office auditorium of the human rights organization Abolombon.
The event was jointly organized by Abolombon and the Human Rights Forum, Gaibandha, with the support of the European Union, Free Press Unlimited, and Article 19.
The meeting was presided over by Wajiuar Rahman, president of the Environment Movement, Gaibandha. Discussions were attended by Professor Zahurul Kaiyum; Zillur Rahman Khondaker, executive head of Udyog Foundation; Murshidur Rahman Khan, executive director of Chinnomul Mohila Samity; Prabir Chakraborty, executive director of Abolombon; Farid Ahmed, executive head of DWIP; Ashraful Alam from SKS Foundation; Rajatkanti Barman, organizational secretary of Gaibandha Press Club; Golam Rabbani Musa, convener of the Indigenous–Bengali Solidarity Council (Sadar Unit); Shirin Akhter, general secretary of Udichi; journalist Riktu Prasad; human rights activist Anjali Rani Devi; Kaiser Rahman Romel, district correspondent of the Daily Samayer Alo; women’s leader Selina Akhter Soma; Asadul Islam, executive director of GRDF; Lipi Khatun of the Rural Advancement Organization; Sharmin Sultana of the development organization Bonarpara; Khilon Rabidas of the Rabidas Forum; and indigenous representative Suravi Mardi, among others.
Speakers said that the report provides valuable insights into the human rights and law-and-order situation in Gaibandha district. They emphasized that marginalized communities have long faced social, economic, and legal deprivation in the region.
The discussion highlighted that people in Gaibandha continue to face discrimination in land rights, education, healthcare, and access to justice. The release of this report, they said, will play an important role in raising social awareness, ensuring justice, and improving the living standards of marginalized communities.
