Report of the District Human Rights Defenders Network : 556 crimes committed in Satkhira in three months

In Satkhira, 556 crimes were committed in three months (March, April and May). Of these, 14 were for murder, 1 for robbery, 14 for rape, 76 for torture of women, 1 for kidnapping, 4 for theft of a sawmill, 2 for cattle theft, 5 for car theft, 10 for other thefts, and 2 for road accidents. In addition, 10 for human trafficking, 4 under the Pornography Act, 2 under the Cyber Security Act, 21 for smuggling, 155 under the Narcotics Control Act and 235 other cases were filed. These cases have been filed in 8 police stations of the district.

These statistics on crime in the district were presented at the quarterly meeting of the District Human Rights Defender Network, Satkhira district branch under the Uttaran-DHRNS project.

Advocate Abul Kalam Azad, convener of the District Human Rights Defender Network, Satkhira district branch, presided over the meeting held at the Satkhira Mangrove Hall on Saturday (June 14) afternoon.

The meeting also informed that in the last three months, 20 people have died in road accidents in the district, 2 have died after being crushed by a wall, 4 have drowned, 5 have died from electrocution, 2 have died from drinking poisonous alcohol, 6 bodies have been recovered, and 2 have died from lightning.

Advocate Munir Uddin, Member Secretary of District Human Rights Defenders Network, Satkhira District Branch, presented this report.

The report states that the District Human Rights Defender Network, Satkhira district branch has provided legal support to 3 people in the last three months. It has prevented child marriage in 5 cases, conducted fact finding in 5 cases, and provided counseling in 7 cases. Assistance is ongoing in 14 cases. The meeting expressed concern and said that in the last month of April, 43 cases of unnatural deaths occurred in the district.

In addition, the speakers highlighted incidents of drug trafficking, smuggling, mob violence, extortion, forcible entry, and minority oppression. The chief guest at the discussion meeting was

In addition, special guests included Tipu Sultan, coordinator of the Human Rights Culture Foundation, Nahida Sultana, civic leader Professor Abdul Hamid, Professor Dr. Dilara Begum, convener of the District Civic Committee Advocate Sheikh Azad Hossain Belal, executive director of Swadesh Sangstha Madhav Chandra Dutta, staff reporter of Prothom Alo Kalyan Banerjee, journalist Momtaz Ahmed Bapi, women leader Farida Akhter Beauty, Jyotsna Dutta, advocate Asaduznazaman Dilu, NGO personality Shyamal Biswas, Louis Rana Gain, JSD leader Professor Idris Ali, president of the District Gono Forum Alinur Khan Babul, Munsur Rahman of the Revolutionary Workers Party, Udichir district president Sheikh Siddiqur Rahman, human rights activists Golam Rasul, Abul Kalam Azad, Sakibur Rahman Babla, and people from different classes and professions.
