 The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has undertaken a major project to expand the country’s fleet of water vessels.

 Under this initiative, 18 modern vessels are being constructed at a private shipbuilding company, Three-Angle Marine Shipyard, located in Nayanagar area of Gazaria upazila in Munshiganj district. According to officials, the project is now 90% complete.

On Monday (August 4), the Advisor on Shipping and Labour & Employment Affairs, Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain, visited the shipyard to inspect the progress of the construction. Speaking to journalists afterward, he said, “The initiative to incorporate new technology-driven water vessels into the fleet of this state-owned corporation is commendable. Due to some technical issues, delivery could not start on schedule, but if everything goes well, the handover process will begin from September.”

Under this project, BIWTC is receiving the following vessels: six ferries, two firefighting tugboats, two coastal oil tankers, four high-speed sea-trucks, three passenger vessels, and one specialized inspection boat.

When asked about the project’s progress, Engineer Aminul Islam, Managing Director of Three-Angle Shipyard, said, “Although we’re not fully ready within the original timeframe, we’re moving rapidly in the final phase. We expect to start handing over the vessels step by step between November and December.”

Accompanying the Shipping Advisor was the Advisor on Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan.
