Woman's leg severed in landmine explosion at Naikhongchhari border

A landmine explosion at the Nikuchhari border in Ghumdhum Union of Naikhongchhari Upazila in Bandarban has left a woman, Lucky Sing (24), with a severed leg.

The incident occurred on Monday morning between border pillars 42 and 43, confirmed Naikhongchhari UNO Muhammad Mazharul Islam Chowdhury.

Lucky Sing is the daughter of Sumong Karbari from Gachh Buniya village in Sonaichhari Union of Naikhongchhari upazila. Her left leg was completely severed in the explosion.

Quoting locals, UNO Muhammad Mazharul Islam Chowdhury stated that the explosion occurred when she had crossed over to the Myanmar side of the border to cut bamboo shoots. Locals rescued her and rushed her to the MSF hospital in Ukhiya’s Kutupalong. After receiving initial treatment there, she was referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced care.

Since January, at least 23 people have been injured, including cases of leg amputations, due to landmine explosions along the border.
