An event was held to celebrate Remittance Warriors Day in remembrance of the student-public mass uprising in Munshiganj, under the theme “Migrant rights, our commitment – A discrimination-free Bangladesh for all.”

The discussion program took place on Monday at 4:30 PM in the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. It was jointly organized by the District Administration of Munshiganj, the Technical Training Center (TTC), IMT Munshiganj, and the District Employment and Manpower Office.

Fatema Tul Jannat, the Deputy Commissioner of Munshiganj, attended the event as the chief guest. In her speech, she said that the remittance warriors of Munshiganj have significantly contributed to the overall development of the country. Moreover, even from abroad, they played a role in the July mass uprising. Their contribution cannot be denied. She emphasized that we must all stand by expatriates during their times of trouble.

The event was chaired by Muhammad Musabberul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General).

Muhammad Kazi Humayun Rashid, Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance & Administration) of the district, was present as the special guest. In his speech, he mentioned that remittances played a vital role in the war of independence of Bangladesh. Continuing in that tradition, expatriates boldly organized remittance shutdown programs during the July mass uprising, which had a significant impact on the government at the time.

Later, a crest was presented as a gift to Zahir Ahmed from Adhara Union and on behalf of Tanjida from Rampal Union, to Shahinur, acknowledging them as remittance recipients from the district.

Other speakers at the event included Nahida Parveen, Principal of the TTC. A keynote paper was presented by Sujon Mahmud, an instructor at IMT. The program was hosted by Eugene Mrong, field officer of the Ovibashi Kormi Unnayan Program (OKUP), Munshiganj. On behalf of the expatriates, Md. Al Amin shared his reflections.

Representatives from various NGOs working with migrant workers were also present.
