A syndicate of unscrupulous individuals is illegally constructing shops by occupying roads and footpaths in the Baraiyarhat Municipal Market, part of the first-class municipality of Baraiyarhat in Mirsarai Upazila, Chattogram. Since a change in local power dynamics in August last year, the number of these unauthorized structures has multiplied.

Despite eviction notices issued by Municipal Administrator and UNO Somaia Akter, and public announcements warning against the encroachments, around 10–12 additional shops were reportedly constructed during the night following these warnings.

As a result, nearly 50 illegal shops now occupy significant portions of the roads and footpaths, causing severe traffic congestion and forcing pedestrians onto the main roads, increasing the risk of accidents. Sources claim that the syndicate collects daily rent from these shops.

Near the traffic police box, about 10–12 shops have been constructed, up from just five a month ago. On the western side of the highway, six shops were recently built on top of drainage systems, completely covering the footpath. This trend of illegal expansion continues unchecked.

Pedestrian Nargis Akter expressed frustration, saying, "It feels like there's no administration in this country. If there was, such blatant encroachment wouldn't be possible. We have no space to walk safely."

Tea vendor Babul admitted paying daily fees to certain individuals but refused to disclose details, saying, "We give money to the authorities every day, but I can’t say who takes it or how much."

Emran Hossain, who operates a roadside tea stall, claimed he pays 30 BDT daily in tolls to the municipality, having set up his shop a few months ago. He added that municipal staff collect the fees directly.

In response, UNO Somaia Akter said, "I have already inspected the illegally constructed shops built on roads and footpaths. This is a serious violation. We will soon launch a full-scale eviction drive to remove these structures."
